学部・修士時代に行ったカメフジツボ類の群集生態学的研究 (Hayashi & Tsuji, 2008) 遂行当時、カメフジツボ類を含むオニフジツボ超科は、ウミガメ類や鯨類にのみ特有に付着するという特殊な生態を持つことからサンプリングが困難であるため、分類学的情報も限られていました。そのため、ウミガメ類の体表に付着するフジツボ類の同定が充分になされていなかったという大きな問題点があります。そこでカメフジツボ類の生態学を最終的に目指しつつも、まずはオニフジツボ超科の分類学・系統学をテーマとして博士課程に進学し、各種の宿主・採集場所の情報、周殻から軟体部まで含めた詳細な記載を行いました(Hayashi, 2012)。この分類学的研究を遂行する過程で、ウミガメ類・クジラ類に特有に付着するフジツボ類、オニフジツボ超科について原記載 Linnaeus (1758) 以来550本以上(学会プロシーディング等を除く)に及ぶ徹底した文献調査を遂行し、古今東西のカメフジツボ採集記録をまとめました。この文献調査ではこれまでに記載されたオニフジツボ超科(3科、14属(化石属3属を含む)、44種(化石種15種を含む))の文献情報・分布情報がまとめられています。
